Olive Producers NE Victoria

Presidents Report 2011.

Due to a wet growing season across the majority of the region fruit quantity was up, however oil quantity was down. This resulted in harvest yields for the region remaining consistent with previous years and oil flavours being at the mild end of the spectrum. Disease pressure from the wet conditions was also greater with many incidences of sooty mould reported.

Our Association has survived but the participation rate in any activity is low. We have again lost our representative on the AOAV board with Claire Wallace resigning from being our rep. but remaining on the board as an independent member. The AOAV has a new president , Charles Meo, who is the Victorian Director on the AOA. Charles has reinvigorated the AOAV but has similar problems to every association with participation. Members who are interested in Melbourne markets should contact Charles as he is organising regular attendances at several markets with a stall which can be utilised by members.

The 12th Australian Golden Olive Awards was held in Rutherglen in September and again was a successful event. The success of this event was due to the extremely hard work of Laurel Nowacki who almost single hand idly ran the event for the 4th time. The peoples choice award again proved popular and was ably run by Caitlin Sylvester and Wayne Hurley. The AGOA has been and remains the main event on our calendar and if it is to continue needs some thought from the membership as to its future direction and some input from those members.

OPNEV participated and co convened the Australian Olive Association's National Conference in Wangaratta in October and by all reports was a great success. OPNEV received some very favourable press coverage along with the messages local, quality, freshness, code of practice and of course the Australian Olive Industry. Speakers from Spain, USA, Italy, England and Australia provided very similar messages on quality, adulteration and the very positive and progressive impact our new Australian Standard was having around the world.

I would like to thank all the executive and members of the OPNEV for their help and support this year and the last 5 years and wish every success into the future as I will be stepping down as President.

Micheal Freudenstein, - President OPNEV
